  1. The history of laptops chronicles the 1970s efforts to construct compact, portable personal computers that combine the components, inputs, outputs, and capabilities of a desktop computer in a small chassis.
  2. The Osborne 1 was the first commercially successful portable computer, released by Osborne Computer Corporation on April 3, 1981. It weighs 24.5 pounds (11.1 kilograms), costs USD 1,795, and runs the CP/M 2.2 operating system. It is powered by a wall socket because there is no onboard battery, but it is still classified as a portable device because it can be carried in one hand when the keyboard is closed.
