The soft drink is a clear lime soda which is a perfect drink for a hot summer day. It was first produced in 1929 by Charles Leiper Grigg, who launched his company in ST Louis named the Howdy Corporation in 1920.
- Prior to inventing 7 Up, Grigg had created an orange soft drink named “Whistle” for the Vess Soda Company.
- On its launch in the year 1929, the first name of this soft drink was Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda.
- The lime soda was launched just two weeks before the Wall Street crash of 1929, which later resulted in the great depression of 1930.
- The founder of the company Grigg changed the name of the company from Howdy to Seven Up corporation, and by the year 1940, the company became the third-best soft drink company in the world.
- Grigg, the founder of the company, died on April 16, 1940, and his son took command of the company.

Lithium Citrate was been used for many decades for the treatment of psychiatric manic states and bipolar disorders and also used to treat hangovers at those times. In 1948 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of this drug from other soft drinks and 7up as well.

- The soft drink sprite was introduced by Coca-Cola Company in the year 1961 to compete with 7up.
- 7UP used to be a Pepsi product in North America; however, it is now a Dr. Pepper Snapple Group brand. PepsiCo still owns the rights for 7UP in other parts of the world except for North America.
- It is a myth that 7Up names come from the drink having a pH of 7, which would be basic as per the pH scale. However, this is not the case as the pH of this soft drink is close to 3.79, making it acidic and quite similar to other soft drinks.
